Who We Are

Small Town Records is Duke University’s record label – students who share their passion for music. As a part of Duke University Union, we serve the student committee with concerts and freely distributed music.

We are musicians, sound engineers, live technicians, musical consultants, graphic designers, producers, web designers, photographers, and above all else, all the fans who have helped us grow to where we are now.

Our passion is to bring music to the Duke community and help everyone have a great time along the way, so please, get in touch and let us know how we're doing!

Who We Work With

We go where the talent is, and talent is everywhere – student artists and musicians from all over have used the Small Town Records studio to go farther with their work. Small Town Records has worked with Duke alumni Mike Posner and Delta Rae, as well as numerous established artists.

Small Town Records coordinates with other campus groups including Duke University Union, HDRL (Resident Assistants and House Councils), Duke Campus Farm, and various fraternities and sororities.

Studio time is free for students! Check out our studio calendar for availability, and visit our bookings page to request studio time or request an artist to perform at your event! We'd love to hear from you!

Our History

Small Town Records was founded in 2007 by Colin Tierney. Before we were in the Bryan Center, we had a studio under the Loop in the West Union building. Under the leadership of Julian Jacobson, we transitioned to the Bryan Center where we now share a studio space with Duke Student Broadcasting.

Directions To Our Studio

You can reach the Studio by taking the north side elevator of Bryan Center (by Reynolds and Griffith Theaters) to the 1st floor and following signage to the DSB/STR Studio. You can also enter from the Bryan Center basement greenhouse entrance by the traffic circle.

About the Studio

Our Capabilities

The studio is built around a ProTools system (fully integrated with our Tascam DM4800 digital mixing console), though we are also equipped with a  variety of other audio and video editing suites to meed varying technical needs and preferences. Our microphone cabinet includes equipment from standard professional audio manufacturers like Shure, Sennheiser, and Audio Technica, in addition to  ribbon and condenser microphones from elite manufacturers like Neumann and Royer. The studio backline includes a drum kit, various guitar and bass amplifiers, and a selection of keyboards. Finally, the studio space itself consists of a dedicated control room, a large studio space, and a vocal booth with full acoustical treatment.

Who We Serve

While the primary objective of Small Town Records is to serve and promote the musical community at Duke, outside artists of both local and national stature are routinely welcomed into our studio. If you are interested in having one of our artists perform for your event or you’d like to book time in the studio, please visit our bookings page and check out the studio calendar for our availability. We are excited to work with you!
